Policy Management for Disease Control and Environmental Health
Dr. Chaparro wishes to apply his veterinary background and academic knowledge to develop new approaches to specific areas of public health care in South Africa. His fields of interest are the control of zoonotic diseases, food and water hygiene, and environmental health. He is currently Deputy Director of the Pretoria Biomedical Research Centre, where he oversees the staff and facility operations. Through the Humphrey Fellowship, he would like to establish a collaboration aimed at improving health in South Africa. Dr. Chaparro has a diploma in tropical health from the Faculty of Medicine and an MMed in wildlife diseases, both from the University of Pretoria, and a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Universidad de la Salle in Bogota, Colombia.
Medical Science and Epidemiology
Dr. Cavaljuga serves as a teaching and research assistant in the Institute of Epidemiology of the University of Sarajevo Medical School. During the Bosnian War, she helped prevent the spread of water-borne diseases in the city. She intends to apply her Humphrey Fellowship to her interests in educating professionals in public health management and HIV/AIDS prevention, public health policy and planning, health system transition, and formation of epidemiological departments, in order to help rebuild her country. She also wishes to improve her knowledge in epidemiology. Dr. Cavaljuga has an MD in general medicine and an MS in epidemiology from the University of Sarajevo, where she has also conducted postgraduate work in informatics and health economics.
HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control
Since 1987, Dr. Hasan has served as a federal government medical officier and assistant professor; and now as a pathologist, working in administrative, teaching, and research posts in large public-sector hospitals and institutes throughout Pakistan, as a member of Pakistan's Ministry of Health. A trained immunologist, Dr. Hasan established and now manages the World Health Organization-funded HIV/AIDS center in the Federal Government Services Hospital in Islamabad. Through the Humphrey Fellowship, he will study public health resource management, prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, and C, and immunology. Dr. Hasan has a Ph.D. in pathology from the University of London and an MBBS from the Rawalpindi Medical College in Pakistan.
Health Policy and Management
For the past three years, as director of a general hospital, Dr. Iamashita has worked hard to organize a community-wide effort to improve hospital conditions and provide higher quality, dignified health care to the 800,000 residents of an impoverished region in Sao Paulo. In November 1997, he was promoted to assistant health coordinator of the Sao Paulo metro area, where he is helping establish new hospitals. With the Humphrey Fellowship, he hopes to enhance his knowledge of health policy, financial management, health economics, quality improvement, and health care system reform in order to advance health care in his state. Dr. Iamashita has received an MD from Faculdade Medicina, and is nearing completion of an MPH from the School of Public Health, both at the University of Sao Paulo.
Policy and Management for Disease Control and Epidemiology
Since 1975, Mr. Mahfood has worked in various capacities for the Directorate of Public Health in Bahrain's Ministry of Health and currently serves as senior supervisor in the Communicable Disease Control Section where he oversees field activities of health inspectors involved in disease surveillance, epidemic investigation, and disease control. He earned an MPH from the University of Glasgow in 1995. He views the Humphrey Fellowship as an opportunity to broaden his perspective and enhance his skills in order to strengthen his country's disease surveillance system, optimize the inservice training program for health workers, improve methods of public health education, and conduct and evaluate epidemiological research.
Policy and Management for Disease Control
In Mirebalais, a major city in the impoverished country of Haiti, Dr. Pierre-Pierre has served as an internal medicine specialist for the past four years. Since 1993, he has also coordinated the HIV/STD prevention and education program for CITYMED/MARCH. While he intends to continue practicing medicine, his goal with the Humphrey Fellowship is to increase his knowledge of community health and prepare himself for a leadership role in establishing health education and disease prevention programs throughout Haiti. In 1984, he received his MD from the School of Medicine of the Haiti State University in Port-Au-Prince, and a certificate as a specialist in internal medicine in 1988.
Public Health Policy and Management
Dr. Shah has been with the Society for Education, Welfare and Action (SEWA)-Rural, a voluntary development organization in rural Gujarat, India, almost since its inception 17 years ago. Currently associate director of the Community Health Program, he provides comprehensive primary health care at the grass roots level under a unique government-nongovernment collaborative arrangement. He is also actively involved in training and field operational research activities. Through the Humphrey Fellowship, he hopes to broaden his knowledge of public health advocacy and communication and prepare himself to assume greater responsibility with SEWA-Rural. Dr. Shah received his MD in Preventative and Social Medicine from the Government Medical College in South Gujarat University in Surat, India. His MBBS is from Sayaji Medical College at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, India.
Epidemiology and Services Planning
Since 1979, Dr. Telles Guerra has been affiliated with the Sao Paulo State Secretary of Health in Brazil, where she currently serves as Chief of Epidemiological Studies and Planning at the Instituto de Infectologia Emilio Ribas. In that capacity, she processes and analyzes data used in epidemic control, surveillance, and planning. She intends to use the Humphrey Fellowship to develop expertise in health services planning and management in order to work with alternative health care programs, including the hospice concept in Brazil. Dr. Telles Guerra studied at the University of Sao Paulo, where she received her MD and MS in Preventive Medicine and is now enrolled in the DrPH program.
