What is your professional background and where do you currently work?
I am a MD trained in Family Medicine and currently receiving additional training in integrative medicine (through a fellowship). I currently work at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Why did you enroll in the EMPH program?
I am interested in transitioning to a career in health policy (while still practicing some outpatient medicine on the side). I am particularly interested in social determinants of health, nutrition, and refugee/immigrant care.
Since you have enrolled, what is the most valuable skill you have learned in the EMPH program?
Even with training in medical school and residency, I did not truly know how to evaluate scientific evidence until starting the EMPH program. Right now, I feel that I can make much more informed decisions when evaluating research.
What is the title of your practicum or intended practicum?
Uncertain at this time.
What are your potential topics/titles for your Thesis?
I am interested in evaluating physical activity in schools (which has recently diminished to one day per week).
What advice do you wish someone had given you prior to enrollment?
The workload can be more than you expect at times, so it is really important to start longer assignments earlier. I personally realized that two classes at a time allowed me to balance work and personal life with the program.
