You will view and complete all online lessons through software called Canvas—a course management software compatible with both Microsoft Windows and Apple operating systems.

This is where you will log-in to access lecture materials, submit assignments, take quizzes, and communicate with the instructor and your classmates. Classes are all instructor-led, not auto-tutorial or self-study. All students in a course engage in a course in the same time frame, but not necessarily at the same moment.

Technology Requirements

All EMPH students are required to have high-speed Internet access, a computer, and a printer. An iPad or similar device does not provide the needed functionality for the EMPH program. Note that you may periodically need to install plug-ins or specialized browsers, so make sure you have the appropriate permissions to download software on your computer.

Some courses require additional software that is only available in the Microsoft Windows platform. Emory University provides support for the Microsoft Windows platform, limited support for the Apple Macintosh platform, and no support for Linux. Visit Rollins' IT website for more details »

  • Microsoft Windows Platforms: Windows 8, 7, Vista or Apple Platforms: Mac OS 10.6 or higher
  • Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Recent version of browser with current version of Java enabled
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Current antivirus program

The following technologies are not supported in the current version of Blackboard:

  • Windows XP 64-bit
  • Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7
  • Firefox 1.x, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5
  • Safari 2.0, 3.x  (or any version on Windows)
  • Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, 10.5
  • Java 5

(Note that changes to these technologies are ongoing.)

Laptop Computer Requirements

It is required that students have access to a laptop in order to properly connect to RSPH's technology resources. The Office of Information Technology requires students to have access to a laptop in order to take advantage of web-based software and wireless resources. Many of the courses taught at the Rollins School of Public Health require computer use. You will learn to use software such as EpiInfo and SAS during the course of your study. Having a laptop also enables you to be able to connect to the Internet and the RSPH network wirelessly.

Culminating Experiences

All EMPH students are expected to complete a culminating experience. For details, please visit the page for your track program:

Applied Epidemiology

Applied Public Health Informatics

As with all MPH students, a 200-400 hour practical experience is also required. Click here to learn more about the practicum requirement
