Meet: Thanawadee Chantian

Thanawadee Chantian, MPH student at the Rollins School of Public Health

Program and year: 1st Year, MPH in Environmental Health

Undergraduate university and major: I graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine from Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Before coming to Rollins: I was a general physician in community hospital; completed a 2-year training stint in the International Field Epidemiology Training Program Thailand; and I was a medical epidemiologist in the Bureau of Occupational and Environmental Diseases, Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand.

Why I chose Rollins: Atlanta is a capital of public health, I admired the successes of Rollins alumni in the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand, and I thought it might not be too cold for me.

Why I chose EH: I have been working in environmental and occupational diseases, but I am still not strong in environmental health. I try to apply epidemiology in my work so I would like to fill in the gaps.

Research interests: Surveillance data management, emergency response and preparedness, environmental epidemiology

Career goals: Be an expert in environmental epidemiology in order to improve surveillance data and emergency response relating to occupational and environmental health. Support public health officers and occupational medicine residency in research designs.

Three favorite things about Rollins:
1. The variety of workshops, meetings, and recreational activities
2. Good support for international students
3. Technology (like several computers in a study area), Blackboard, and free Microsoft Office for students. Easy to access online books via library website.

Favorite classes: Epidemiology

Clubs and extracurriculars: Thai Student Association of Emory University

Advice for prospective students: If you have a medical background, you may need to review your basic science knowledge from a pre-medicine class physics class from high school. It is gonna be fun!!!!

My favorite thing about Atlanta is: People here are friendly and they often greet me even though we don’t know each other.

Anything else you’d like to add that would be helpful for prospective applicants?: Again, it’s gonna be fun!!!
