DeHaan Lecture On Health Promotion And Education Slated For May 4

Trained as a physician and epidemiologist, Ichiro Kawachi, MD, PhD, has focused his research during the past 10 years on uncovering the social and economic determinants of population health. The director of the Harvard Center for Society and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, will present the 2004 Virginia S. DeHaan Lecture on Health Promotion and Education, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rita Anne Rollins Room in the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University campus. Dr. Kawachi who also holds an appointment as Harvard as an Associate Professor of Health and Social Behaviors, will speak on Social Capital and Population Health: Lessons Learned and Future Directions.

His current research focuses on how social forces such as income distribution, residential segregation and inequalities in political participation, is linked to patterns of health and disease in populations. He's also interested in how psychosocial factors like job stress and negative emotions are related to risks of heart disease.

Dr. Kawachi received his medical degree in 1985 and his doctorate in 1991 from Otago University in New Zealand. He has taught courses on the social determinants of health in New Zealand, Chile, Mexico and Australia, and since 2000, has served as the Senior Editor in Social Epidemiology of the international journal Social Science and Medicine.

The annual lecture honors Virginia DeHaan, an outstanding faculty member and alumna of the Rollins School of Public Health who pioneered the development of the school's health promotion and education track. Ms. DeHaan's family, friends and students established the lecture series in 1990 to bring national visibility to the school.
