PREPARING TOMORROW'S LEADERS

The mission of the Department of Health Policy & Management (HPM) is to promote the importance of health care access, cost, and delivery by training today’s leaders in health policy, health services research, and health care management.

Our faculty bring diverse skillsets to the classroom with expertise/backgrounds in such fields as political science, economics, health care, management, and more. They provide students with a professional practice perspective in an ever changing health-care system.

Rollins prepares HPM students to take on challenges of the future by ensuring they gain critical skills in:

  • Health Policy, Analysis, and Health Services Research
  • Quality Improvement and Strategic Management
  • Human Resource Management in Health Care
  • Public and Health Care Administrative Law
  • Financial and Managerial Accounting
  • Economic and Program Evaluation
  • Health Care Marketing
With the passage of the health care reform package, we have rededicated ourselves to training the next generation of leadership to take on the new challenges. Issues such as prevention, health care payment, quality of health care, and health insurance exchanges will require academics and practitioners at all levels to be prepared with state-of-the-art, cutting edge training. I can’t think of a more exciting time to be in public health.
Dr. Kenneth Thorpe, Robert W. Woodruff Professor and Chair

MPH or MSPH? Both the MPH and MSPH degrees provide students with a comprehensive public health graduate education to succeed in their desired careers. The primary distinction between the two is the master of science in public health (MSPH) degree in health services research is aimed toward students interested in research or to those who wish to pursue a doctoral degree. Both of our master of public health (MPH) options (health policy or health care management) are practice-based degrees aimed toward students interested in the business or policy advocacy aspects of public health. MSPH students are required to complete a thesis related to a health services research topic. MPH students complete a capstone for their culminating experience.

I conduct research on health care utilization and spending trends and work on an interdisciplinary team to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an integrated delivery care program at Grady Memorial Hospital. I am interested in the role of technology in improving health systems (in particular cancer care), and am involved with the Rollins mHealth Collaboration and Rollins Association for Cancer Prevention and Control.
Steve Chen, MSPH 2020

We provide a multidisciplinary course of study that prepares students to meet the changing demands of health care, public health, and health policy environments.
