ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
We are seeking value-driven applicants committed to improving health globally and reducing health inequity. Preference is given to applicants who have experience working or volunteering with domestic or international underserved populations, through such programs as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and Teach for America.
Rollins is intentional about creating an experience in which students will be exposed to a wide variety of subjects with a uniting theme. I see a connection from the classes I take in biostatistics to the courses I take in epidemiology as it relates to high-level global health coursework.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION
The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in global health provides students with applied public health training for work in a global context. This program is offered in 20-, 15-, and 12-month formats.
HDGH students gain critical skills necessary for launching a career domestically or internationally that addresses the public health challenges of the future such as emerging and re-emerging infections, access to sexual and reproductive health services, nourishing populations, and migration and population changes.
CUSTOMIZED LEARNING
Many of our students decide to enhance their degree with a certificate in one of nine specialized areas. Our certificate program provides students with the opportunity to build their expertise in pressing public health issues (including human rights, mental health, complex humanitarian emergencies, maternal and child health, social determinants of health, and more) through course work, an applied practice experience, and a culminating experience tailored to their area of focus. WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
All HDGH faculty work domestically and internationally, bringing their first-hand expertise and field work experiences to the classroom. Students in the HDGH department often work side-by-side with our award-winning faculty on international public health projects that address such topics as:
- HIV/AIDS
- Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Maternal and Child Nutrition
- Vaccine-Preventable Disease
- Chronic Diseases
- Humanitarian Response
- Access to Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
GO GLOBAL
All Rollins master’s students participate in a 200+ hour applied practice experience in a public health setting—either domestically or internationally. Topics covered during past domestic and international experiences include:
- HIV screening in Haitian prisons
- Indian NGO health system strengthening and policy work
- Micronutrients and World Food Programme evaluation in Uganda
- Urban flooding and WASH practices in Dhaka city slums
- Service provision for female sex workers in Rwanda
- Evaluating the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s national diabetes guidelines
- GPS technology and the relationship between mobility and malaria outbreaks in rural Peru
In my first year, I served as an intern for the International Association of National Public Health Institutes. During my second year, I worked for the National Public Health Institutes Program at CDC. Over the summer, I completed my practicum with IRC WASH, a think-and-do tank that focuses on the WASH sector in The Hague, Netherlands. Rollins has provided me with so much in a short time; it has been truly enriching and enjoyable.
