BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

The Department of Behavioral, Social and Health Education Sciences (BSHES) strives to improve the health of all people and promote health equity through research and practice on the behaviors and social conditions that influence health. Students explore the impacts of human behavior and the socio-cultural contexts on population and community health and wellbeing. The BSHES program seeks diverse graduate students who have a strong desire to positively influence public health through effective design and implementation of health promotion programs, meaningful community engagement, and innovative research.

BSHES is made up of a collaborative group of talented faculty passionate about bringing a positive change to a wide variety of public health fields. Faculty are committed to interdisciplinary scholarship and hail from such disciplines as psychology, sociology, epidemiology, genetics, and history. Leading health educators and behavioral scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Cancer Society, and The Carter Center serve as adjunct faculty who teach and work closely with students.

We continue to support an educational culture where everyone’s authentic identities and perspectives are not just welcomed, but seen as true assets. Our personal identities and perspectives are often our most valuable skill sets, as they guide our methods for achieving the types of public health solutions we want to see in our own lives. We embrace collectively what we each bring as tools to use and learn from one another on our journey to public health solutions.
Dr. Don Operario, Chair and Professor

What makes BSHES different is that we not only take the time to understand how to conduct research in a variety of public health fields, but we hone our skills in learning how to effectively apply what we learn into our work to help foster effective change.

DEGREES

The MPH degree program is geared toward students from diverse backgrounds with broad interests ranging from human behavior, social sciences, and political science, to urban planning and journalism. Dual-degree programs are also offered through partnerships with other Emory University graduate schools to give Rollins students specialized training to prepare them for their career goals.

Many BSHES students choose to pursue in-depth coursework in a specific area and enhance their degree with a certificate in one of nine specialized areas. Our certificate program provides students with the opportunity to build their expertise in pressing public health issues (including health and human rights, mental health, religion and health, and more) through coursework, an applied practice experience, and a culminating experience tailored to their area of focus. Visit our website to learn about our diverse certificate options. sph.emory.edu/academics/certificates

COMMUNITY ENGAGED

The city of Atlanta serves as an extension to the classroom, with faculty and community leaders serving as mentors to students. State and local health departments, county school systems, and public and private organizations in the city of Atlanta are often the sites of applied practice experiences, research projects, and settings for our courses.

Students develop practical skills, like community assessment and program planning, while working in the community during their degree program. A few of our internationally recognized partners include:

  • CDC
  • Deloitte Consulting
  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
  • World Health Organization
  • Save the Children

IMPACTFUL RESEARCH

BSHES faculty members are renowned scholars in such areas as behavioral risk factor trajectories, social determinants of health, health disparities, health education, social and behavioral interventions, and dissemination and implementation. Students have many opportunities to work with faculty on their research projects. Titles of past projects students assisted with include:

  • Sexually transmitted infections and HIV acquisition among high-risk populations in the U.S. and abroad
  • Societal factors influencing access to services for reproductive health care
  • Domestic and international home-based cancer prevention interventions
  • Pharmacy and community-based interventions for reducing harms of drug use

MENTORSHIP + CAREER READINESS

The BSHES curriculum prepares students to learn and apply marketable skills that lend to their effectiveness in the field and their long-term success as public health professionals. Academic advisors, faculty mentors, and our Office of Career Development offer career guidance, interview practice sessions, and resume advisement from day one to help our students articulate their career goals and find meaningful work as public health professionals.

BSHES provided me with opportunities inside and outside of the classroom to expand my public health knowledge. These experiences allowed me to understand what industries fit me best, the type of services I wanted to provide, and how I wanted to make a difference. Without BSHES, I would not have the dream job I always wanted.
Yasmin Kashfipour, MPH 2019
