Overview
ZAP Asthma is a 16 member public,
private partnership created to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality from asthma for
children living in Atlanta's Empowerment Zone. Utilizing an "action
research/participatory research model," known asthma triggers in the home environment
of study participants are identified and ameliorated, utilizing the skills of trained
community health workers, who assist families in sustaining the environmental
interventions.
The study will monitor the impact of reductions in exposure to cockroach antigens, dust
mites, and environmental tobacco smoke on the severity of the disease, and, on cost of
care, schools days missed, and parent work days missed.
The ZAP Asthma model creates a platform for galvanizing community assets to respond to
health problems embedded with complex social systems, by building community systems that
sustain continuous improvements in community health status
