FFI Leadership Awards

FFI gives leadership awards to individuals who contribute demonstrably toward efforts to make flour fortification a priority in their country. Award recipients may be nominated from any sector, and the FFI Executive Management Team serves as the award selection committee. To nominate someone for an award, contact Sarah Zimmerman, FFI Communications Coordinator. Information about recent award recipients is below.

New Delhi, India, 2012

Dr. S.K. Nanda, left, a principal secretary of the government of Gujarat state in India, received an FFI leadership award from Scott Montgomery, FFI Director, for his remarkable contribution towards promoting flour fortification in Gujarat.

Dr. Nanda was the first person in India to enforce quasi-mandatory fortification of wheat flour distributed in the open-market. During November-December, 2005, he brought together all roller flour millers, health and nutrition experts representing international and government agencies under one platform to implement a public-private strategy.

He successfully resolved issues regarding costs, vegetarianism in Indian regulations, and advocacy with government and industry leaders. All 34 industrial mills in Gujarat were fortifying with iron and folic acid by 2006. Smaller mills began fortifying in 2007, and fortified flour was used in school midday lunch meals in 2009. Many states in India have followed the Gujarat example.

FFI Annual Award

Objective
To motivate national fortification champions by recognizing individuals in front of their peers for outstanding work accomplished on behalf of flour fortification

Criteria
Award recipients can be from any sector and more than one award may be given. As flour fortification is or should be an inherent objective of most constituencies central to FFI - government health organizations, non-governmental agencies, disability groups and, to a lesser extent, the medical community - special consideration may be extended to the private sector. The process will be coordinated by the communications committee and nominations will be solicited from the leaders group, with the FFI Executive Committee and staff serving as the selection committee.

Suggested criteria for the Executive Committee to use in deciding award recipients include selecting individuals who:

* Have leadership roles in their organizations;
* Represent organizations that have contributed demonstrably toward making flour fortification a national priority;
* Have advanced quantitatively FFI's objective of achieving 80% By 2015;

Priority consideration should be given to individuals who will likely be present at the conference at which the award is given.
