MEETING ON FLOUR FORTIFICATION IN INDIA
DEVELOPING A PLAN TO ENGAGE WITH ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO SUPPORT FORTIFICATION OF WHEAT FLOUR WITH FOLIC ACID AND IRON December 10 & 11, 2007 Vendome I, Crowne Plaza Delhi, New Friends Colony, New Delhi, India |

BACKGROUND: We are organizing this meeting in order to develop a plan to work together
with millers and Indian authorities to support fortification of wheat flour with folic acid and
iron. Despite recent progress, flour fortification in India is lagging well behind the rest of the
world (only 5% of roller millers are fortifying) and India has a high burden of preventable
neural tube defects and iron deficiency especially among adolescent girls, women and
children. This event will bring together leaders from India and abroad from various
communities. This includes leaders from medical and public health science, industry, the
disability community and international institutions such as the UN.
OVERVIEW: Mr. Venkatesh Mannar, President of the Micronutrient Initiative and Executive Board Member of FFI along with Mr. Glen Maberly, FFI Coordinator, will give the challenge and opening remarks at the meeting. During the first afternoon participants will share their experiences and challenges in implementing the current flour fortification programs in India in advocating for mandatory flour fortification with folic acid and iron in the country. This will be compared to experiences in other parts of the world. A framework will be laid out for developing an advocacy and action plan the following morning. We aim to keep the meeting informal and interactive in order to gain as much as possible from everyone's experience. We will invite participants to join us for dinner to continue this conversation in an informal social setting. OUTCOME: We will consider the meeting a success if we can agree on and develop the elements of a plan to expand flour fortification in India rapidly over the next 3 years.
