Thanks to everyone who came out to Soccer For Peace, June 25, 2005!
The event was a tremendous success! We had over 500 people show up
for the soccer clinic and exhibition matches. The Lost Boys tied 1-1 with
the Atlanta Select Team. AND, most importantly, we managed to fill our
bins with all the donated soccer equipment!!! Thank you so much for your
support! The event was covered by CNN, and should be showing in the
near future on international broadcasts over Comcast.
Hope to see you next time!

SOCCER FOR PEACE Games, Doc Hollywood, and a premiere of WHO NOSE? Soccer in the Streets, Soccer4Peace, Emory University, the Lost Boys of Sudan, and the real “Doc Hollywood”, Dr. Neil Shulman, are joining forces to raise funds and soccer equipment for the Darfur region of Sudan, and to promote the sport as a tool for building health and peace. This is the first event of its kind in Atlanta. Our purpose is to inspire a worldwide movement that will send soccer equipment to areas of conflict. The first site where these donations will be sent is the Sudan, so that African peacekeeping forces may play soccer with refugees. Future sites will include Palestine and Israel, as well as northern Uganda and the Congo. Soccer for Peace is a concept inspired by Emory’s Dr. Susan Allen, who works with a team of over 300 workers to combat AIDS in Africa, and by foreign affairs officials connected with peacekeeping efforts in Sudan.

Why: To celebrate peace, raise money and send soccer equipment to Darfur! Soccer is known and played in more countries than any other sport, and thus provides a natural vehicle for healthy and peaceful relations throughout the world. Soccer has the power to bring people from different backgrounds together on the playing field, despite their disagreements and conflicts. Soccer matches have helped foster an atmosphere of kinship and trust among groups in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and many other nations. In the United States, at-risk children are less likely to become involved with crime and drugs, when engaged in soccer programs. Playing soccer together instills positive teamwork and cooperation in all kids, allowing those from different races and economic backgrounds to find a common ground.
