People and Places: Neighborhood Effects on Drug Use Among African American Adult
Funder: NIH/NIDA
Years Funded: 3/1/2009-8/31/2014
Principal Investigators: Drs. Claire E. Sterk & Kirk W. Elifson

Project Goals:
The main purposes of this project are to investigate the association between neighborhood context, individual characteristics and neighborhood perceptions with drug use; to examine the association between neighborhood context, individual characteristics, including situational use-related attributes, and neighborhood perceptions with the frequency of drug use; and (3) to identify the spatial patterns or “hot spots” of drug use and to investigate neighborhood and individual-level characteristics, such as gender and age, associated with these spatial patterns. Findings fro this study will yield baseline data for prevention and intervention efforts that consider structural risk and protective factors over and beyond those at the individual level.

Be Healthy: Neighborhood Effects on HIV Risk-Taking
Funder: NIH/NIDA
Years Funded: 6/30/2009-5/31/2014
Principal Investigators: Drs. Claire E. Sterk & Kirk W. Elifson

The aims of this longitudinal study are: (1) To investigate the association between neighborhood context, individual characteristics, and neighborhood perceptions with HIV sexual risk-taking and the link between this risk-taking and HIV status; (2)  To examine the association between neighborhood context, individual characteristics, and neighborhood perceptions with injection drug use (IDU) related HIV risk-taking and this risk-taking and HIV status; (3) To identify the spatial patterns or “hot spots” of HIV risk-taking and to investigate neighborhood and individual-level characteristics, such as alcohol and drug use and perceived HIV risk, associated with these spatial patterns.  The findings will contribute to multi-level, interdisciplinary interventions including researchers, urban planners and policy makers.
