Postcards to Rollins

CUBA

Ariela Freedman, assistant research professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education, was in Cuba in May as part of a delegation from the Center for International Policy to learn more about how Cuba handles emergency planning and response.

MEXICO

Dean Jim Curran and Carlos del Rio, chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health, participated in an MOU signing in Cuarnavaca, Mexico in January 2013. The agreement renews a 20-year collaboration between Rollins and the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica, and fosters partnership in research, teaching, technical assistance, publications and evaluations.

SAUDI ARABIA

During an October visit to Saudia Arabia, Scott McNabb, Research Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health and the Department of Epidemiology, consulted with the Dean, faculty, and students of the new Jazan University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

SAUDI ARABIA

Dean James Curran was also a part of the delegation to Saudia Arabia, along with Scott McNabb and Carlos del Rio, chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health. The trip was designed to strengthen the relationship with the Kingdom and enhance the current King Abdullah Fellows program at Rollins.

KENYA (St. Paul's)

Over the summer, the faculty and staff of St. Paul's University in Kenya met with Emory students and Rollins faculty John Blevins, Mimi Kiser and Deb McFarland as part of an inter-faith trip to address the needs of individuals and communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

KENYA (Nyumbani baby class)

Trey Comstock (far left in photo) was one of the Rollins students who spent the summer working at the Nyumbani Village in Kenya. The village serves orphans and elders who have been left behind by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

KENYA (Consultation Group)

The RSPH Interfaith Health Program helped assemble 98 leaders from 58 different faith-based organizations in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as partners from government agencies in these countries and the U.S. Participants discussed opportunities for faith-based organizations to enhance their role in sustaining community and country-led responses to HIV/AIDS. RSPH’s Sandra Thurman (front row) and Dean Surbey were a part of the consultation group.

TEL AVIV (Conference)

Richard Saltman, professor in the department of health policy and management, participated in a conference in Tel Aviv marking 100 years of public medicine in Israel. Participants included 300 senior members of the Israeli health system and representatives of 16 European OECD member countries. The conference was entitled: "Funding health systems and health services."

SAN DIEGO

Nancy Thompson, associate professor in the department of behavioral sciences and health education and Yvan Bamps, senior research project coordinator, participated in the American Epilepsy Society Meeting in San Diego in December.

The two posed for a postcard promoting the amazing work of canine assistance dogs trained to respond to seizure patients in a variety of ways including barking for help; lying next to and protecting the person who is seizing.

INDIA

Reynaldo Martorell (left), professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health and Robert W. Woodruff Professor of International Nutrition, received the Gopalan Oration and Gold Medal Award from the Nutrition Society of India at its November 2012 annual meeting held at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati, India. Anura V. Kurpad (right), president of the society, presented Martorell with the award.
