Spring 2016 On May 9, we applauded our 2016 class of 529 MPH and MSPH and 24 PhD graduates. We wish them well as they continue forth in their public health careers in the United States and around the world. We also celebrated a semester of accomplishments.
Winter 2016 It gives me great pleasure to announce that Kimberly Jacob Arriola 01MPH, professor of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education, has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs. Kim is best known for her work developing and evaluating interventions that improve access to transplantation and improve public commitment to organ and tissue donations among African Americans.
Fall 2015 The month of October began the celebration our 40th anniversary as a program, our 25th year as a school, and my 20th year as dean. I look back at what we have accomplished in a relatively short period of time with a great deal of pride. Rollins has grown into one of the leading schools of public health in the country, ranked 7th by U.S. News and World Report and in the top 10 in NIH-funded research.
Spring 2015 On May 11, we graduated our 25th class since becoming a school. With more than 8,000 Rollins alumni in 102 countries and all 50 states, these graduates are sure to run into Rollins colleagues everywhere they go in their public health careers. Congratulations to this outstanding group, and as student commencement speaker Alexander Plum urged—Go do public health!
Winter 2015 A $2 million gift from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will fund a new endowed chair, the Conrad N. Hilton Chair in Global Health Ethics. We are currently recruiting to fill the position, which will be a joint faculty appointment in the Hubert Department of Global Health at Rollins and the Emory Center for Ethics. The new chair links Rollins closely with the Emory Center for Ethics, whose faculty come from disciplines across the university. Among them are Ruth Berkelman, professor and director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness and Research, and Dabney P. Evans 98MPH, assistant professor of global health and director of the Center for Humanitarian Emergencies.
Fall 2014 It's been three months since the first two patients to be treated for Ebola virus disease in the U.S. walked out of Emory University Hospital and back into their lives. I am proud of the response by Rollins faculty, adjuncts, alumni, and students, whose efforts have been prompt and far-reaching throughout the epidemic. Our September Public Health Grand Rounds, "Ebola at Emory: Patients to Populations," was standing room only as a panel of doctors and experts on the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa discussed treatment, health care infrastructure, and challenges to containment. Rollins faculty have been quoted extensively in media coverage of the epidemic, helping to educate the public on the disease and its spread. And many from Rollins have been involved in responding to the epidemic, both here and abroad. It would be impossible to mention everyone, but following is a sampling.
Spring 2014 On May 12, we wished our graduating class well as they continue forth in their public health careers in the United States and around the world. We also celebrated a semester of accomplishments among our faculty and students. Carlos del Rio, Hubert Professor and chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health, received the Thomas Jefferson Award, Emory's highest award honoring a faculty or staff member for significant service to the university.
Fall 2013 Rollins set new records this fall welcoming our largest entering class yet, 567 MPH students, and the largest number of international students, 116. Since 2011, Rollins has received the highest number of MPH applications among all U.S. schools of public health. The school also received the most applications for global health, epidemiology, and environmental health. These numbers are a testament to the outstanding quality of our research, teaching, and facilities and the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. Thanks to all who make Rollins the top-ranked school that it is today.
Spring 2013 The end of the school year is somewhat bittersweet—we're saying goodbye to another class of Rollins students. But I take pleasure in knowing that their entry into the public health field will help fuel progress in the years to come on many of the world's most challenging issues.

Facing a world of change. Rollins continues to excel in training professionals who can respond to emergencies such as the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and the terrible storms that battered mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states. This issue provides a year-end message of hope, and spotlights some of our achievements during the fall semester.

Another year full of promise. The RSPH is going strong with the start of the academic year. Our incoming class includes 449 MPH and MSPH students, 32 PhD students, and 10 Humphrey Fellows. This issue of the Dean's Letter includes more facts and figures about our incoming class, research news and grants, new faculty appointments, and faculty and student accomplishments.
Commencement 2012
Commencement 2012. A total of 446 students will receive degrees on May 14. Of those, 42 students will receive dual-degrees, the highest number to date. Additionally, 33 students will receive doctoral degrees, also a record. Our graduates represent 35 states and 29 countries. We also applaud our accreditation team for a successful CEPH accreditation site visit; give kudos to our faculty and student awards; and welcome new faculty and staff.

Summer 2011
Another record start. The RSPH set a record for new enrollment, with 530 incoming MPH and MSPH students representing 43 states and 28 countries. Our new class includes 70 Career MPH and 54 dual-degree students (medicine, nursing, law, business, theology, physician assistant, and physical therapy). We set another record by welcoming 114 international students, who represent 19% of our incoming class and who speak 70 languages and dialects. Our faculty members continue to excel. As of August 1, sponsored research totaled $62.5 million for 2011, up 28% from this time last year. We now have 185 full-time faculty, including 19 new faculty members who joined us this past year.
Commencement 2011
Commencement 2011. A total of 428 students will receive degrees on May 9, including 25 dual degrees, and 14 PhDs. We also applaud our U.S. News ranking as the #6 school of public health in the nation; and pay tribute to a RSPH 'founding father' Dr. David Sencer.
Spring 2011
Emory's Board of Trustees approved a new PhD program in Environmental Sciences. The doctoral program will provide comprehensive training for students to become fluent in population-based and laboratory-based research in environmental health sciences by bridging the interdisciplinary areas of human population research and laboratory-based toxicological and exposure assessment research.
Fall 2009
New chair of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics - Effective July 1, Lance Waller joined the Rollins School of Public Health as Rollins Professor and Chair of the department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. Waller also serves as associated director of the Emory Center for Comprehensive Informatics (CCI).
Spring 2009
New chair of Global Health- Please welcome Carlos del Rio, an internationally renowned infectious disease researcher, as chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health and Hubert Professor of Global Health. He joins RSPH as of April 1. del Rio was a professor of medicine in the School of Medicine's division of infectious diseases and chief of medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital. He will retain a secondary appointment in the medical school.
Spring 2006
New chair of BSHE - Michael Windle will join our faculty in August as Rollins Professor and Chair of the department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education (BSHE). Currently professor of psychology and director of the Center for Advancement of Youth Health (CAYH) and the Comprehensive Youth Violence Center at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, he holds joint appointments in the department of Pediatrics and the Center for Health Promotion.

Hubert Department of Global Health - In September, the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) celebrated 30 years of public health at Emory and the 15th anniversary of the founding of the school.
