Introduction to Public Health Law
Description and Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the law and legal environment in which they work.
The course is designed for those with no legal background. The course will examine how health law policy, politics and
process all work together to create and enforce laws. Participants will become familiar with the legal process by which laws
are created, interpreted and enforced, and introduced to some substantive areas of law relevant to the field of public
health. Laws which reduced harm or facilitate a public health intervention are incorporated into the materials. At the end
of the course, participants will be able to:
- understand the legal systems and structures in which public health is conducted;
- understand how to obtain legal information about substantive areas of law relevant to the field of public health;
- identify and analyze legal issues likely to arise in the administration of public health programs;
- understand the mechanisms and procedures for creating, interpreting and enforcing law; and
- communicate more effectively about legal issues important to public health.
