We aim to improve
the health of children in our region and to inform families,
communities, and health care providers about environmental
hazards, their effects, and practical ways to protect
our children's health. |
Conference: Save
the Date! 2006 National Environmental Public Health Conference
to be held December 4-6 in Atlanta
The theme this year is "Advancing
Envrironmental Public Health: Science, Practice, New Frontiers."
This exciting conference is sponsored by the National Center
for Environmental Health (NCEH), Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry (ATSDR), and Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). Look for upcoming information on PEHSU's
website and at www.cdc.gov/nceh
or www.atsdr.cdc.gov
Lead report: AAP
recommends greater efforts to prevent lead poisoning through
safe housing
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics
urges a shift in policy from case identification and management
to primary prevention through safe housing for all children.
An estimated 25 percent of the 16.4 million U.S. homes with
children under 6 still have significant amounts of lead in
paint, dust, soil, and/or plumbing. Recent studies show that
even low blood lead levels can impair cognitive development
and IQ in children. No "safe" threshold has yet
been identified. Read the report:
Hurricane aftermath:
Clinicians issue recommendations regarding safe return of
children to hurricane and flood-affected areas
As recovery efforts continue in the wake of
hurricane Katrina, the nation's PEHSU units and the American
Academy of Pediatrics issue a joint statement recommending
that children and pregnant women be the last to return to
any areas impacted by flooding and/or hurricanes because they
are especially vulnerable to environmental hazards. Link below
to the joint statement which contains a list of conditions
to be secured before these vulnerable groups return to affected
regions:
News: Former
PEHSU Director takes top position at CDC
We are pleased to announce that former PEHSU Director Howard
Frumkin was named director of the National Center for Environmental
Health at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in
Atlanta. Although the demands of this new position unfortunately
will not allow him to remain on PEHSU's faculty, we congratulate
Dr. Frumkin on this prestigious role and look forward to continued
informal collaboration in the future.
Dr. Robert Geller is the new Principal
Investigator of the Southeast PEHSU. For his biography
as well as credentials of other PEHSU faculty, see our Faculty
and Staff page
