Mission and Structure
Mission
The Georgia Center for Cancer Statistics is a research unit within the Department
of Epidemiology in the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University that
is devoted
to cancer surveillance and epidemiology.
It has been in existence since 1976. Previously, it was known as the Atlanta
Cancer Surveillance Center and was founded within the Emory University
School of Medicine.
The mission of the GCCS is to conduct research, teaching and service
related to cancer surveillance and epidemiology. These activities include
the operation of cancer registries in Georgia, conduct of analytic studies
focused on cancer prevention and control, providing courses and other academic
experiences in cancer surveillance and epidemiology in the Rollins School
of Public Health, providing a resource to the cancer control program of
the Georgia Department of Human Resources, and providing a resource in
cancer registration and epidemiology for hospitals and other health care
providers in the state.
Projects are supported by a number of funding agencies, including the
National Cancer Institute and National Center for Child Health and Human
Development of the National Institutes of Health, the National Program
for Cancer Registries of the Centers for Disease Control, the American
Cancer Society, the Cancer Control Program of the Georgia Department of
Human Resources, and the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University.
Structure
The GCCS is comprised of two primary units, the cancer surveillance
unit and the analytic studies unit. The cancer surveillance unit carries
out cancer registration activities, including the collection of cancer
incidence, survival, and treatment information. The analytic studies unit
is responsible for the conduct of hypothesis oriented research, including
the collection of interview and medical records data for case control and
cohort studies.
